This session (90 to 120 minutes), focuses on presentation and communication skills for elected members in the Council Chamber, through media/social media, at community meetings and in other public interactions.
Neryl shares insights from her work with the Chief of Defence, General Angus Campbell, in helping him prepare for the 2020 public release of the Brereton Inquiry report on alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, including invaluable skills for delivering unwelcome or difficult information to the community.

ADVANCED MEDIA SKILLS FOR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL LEADERS
Members of Council’s Executive team must be able to clearly convey core messages and quickly respond to questions and negative issues.
This session (three to four hours recommended, including a break), is highly practical while also providing leaders with a comprehensive understanding of how the media works and how to approach an interview for maximum results.

MEDIA PERFORMANCE COACHING FOR THE MAYOR AND/OR CEO
Media skills are a critical asset for Council’s most senior spokespeople and these are best honed in the safe environment of an advanced coaching session, using professional lighting and recording equipment to make it as realistic as possible.
In this advanced session (three to four hours recommended,including a break), we will practice with scenarios specifically relevant to your Council. The Mayor and/or CEO benefit from real-time feedback to ensure they are building on their existing media skills and experience. In addition, Neryl will provide more feedback after reviewing the session recording.

MEDIA SKILLS FOR COUNCIL MANAGERS AND TEAM LEADERS
No council can afford to have ongoing negative media coverage or poor media relationships. Council’s broader management team needs a clear understanding of how to interact effectively with the media including how to deliver positive news and manage negative questions.

WHY WORK WITH DR NERYL EAST?
Dr Neryl East is a communication and credibility specialist with extensive experience in local government.
After an award-winning career in television and radio, Neryl moved into senior council communication roles, including Manager Communication and Public Relations at Wollongong City Council and Media and Communications Manager at Shellharbour City Council.
Her other positions have included Head of Communications and Marketing at the Australian War Memorial and Manager External Relations at the University of Western Sydney.
Since establishing her own communication business more than a decade ago, Neryl has provided strategic support to council leaders around Australia.
In the last two years alone she has delivered media and communication training for the Mayors and/or leadership teams of North Sydney, Randwick, Parramatta, Campbelltown, Georges River, Lismore, Fairfield, Yarra City, Bega, Albury City, Shoalhaven, Kiama, Shellharbour, Wollondilly, Port Macquarie, Eurobodalla and Willoughby along with many Councillors, both individually and in groups.
